You know the word count. What you need is the time. Whether it’s a blog draft, an essay, or a video script, this converter turns any word count into minutes — for silent reading and for speaking aloud.
Type a number (or paste your text and let it count for you), pick a pace, and get your answer instantly.
How to convert words to minutes
The conversion is one division: minutes = words ÷ words per minute.
Say your draft is 1,500 words and you read at an average 250 wpm: 1,500 ÷ 250 = 6 minutes. Reading it at a relaxed 200 wpm: 1,500 ÷ 200 = 7.5 minutes. That’s the whole method — the calculator just does it faster than your phone.
The only decision is which speed to use. For silent reading, 200–250 wpm covers most adults and most material. For speaking, use 130–150 wpm — voices are much slower than eyes, which is why a script always takes longer to deliver than to read.
Words to time reference table
Don’t want to touch the calculator? Look it up here. Reading times use standard adult speeds; speaking time uses a natural 140 wpm delivery pace.
| Words | At 200 wpm (relaxed) | At 250 wpm (average) | Speaking (~140 wpm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 2 min 30 sec | 2 min | 3 min 34 sec |
| 1,000 | 5 min | 4 min | 7 min 9 sec |
| 2,000 | 10 min | 8 min | 14 min 17 sec |
| 3,000 | 15 min | 12 min | 21 min 26 sec |
| 5,000 | 25 min | 20 min | 35 min 43 sec |
| 10,000 | 50 min | 40 min | 1 hr 11 min |
Two patterns worth noticing: doubling the words doubles the time (it’s perfectly linear), and speaking takes roughly 75% longer than silent reading at average pace. That second fact surprises almost everyone the first time — and it’s the reason so many presentations overrun.

For anything spoken rather than read, add roughly three-quarters again: 1,000 written words become 7+ minutes at the microphone. Our speech time calculator is built specifically for that job, with conversational, presentation, and keynote paces.
Text to time: what it actually means
“Text to time” is just shorthand for this exact conversion — taking a block of text and expressing its length as minutes instead of words. Editors use it to check article lengths, teachers use it to set reading assignments, and content teams use it for those “X min read” badges. If you’re doing it for published content, the reading time calculator on our homepage handles pasted text directly, no word count needed.
